but directly linked to secret hearings. If you

Ellis Cohen,

Professor

of

English

In fact, Andrew Wilson had heard scattered

rumors about some kind of hush-hush investigation

over at State University. Another reporter had

mentioned that Senator Sloat had been questioned

about B. J. Henson’s activities at the campus but

routinely refused to comment on an investigation

which, he claimed, was merely in its preliminary

stage. Other reporters had questioned the senator

about his association with the committee, and his

response was always the same. He just couldn’t

say anything at this time without jeopardizing the

probe, and he was adamant in reassuring curious

reporters that he would provide an appropriate

response in due time.

C o h e n ’ s confidential

and

urgent

correspondence piqued Wilson’s curiosity. He had

covered Florida politics long enough to know that

inside the capital circle, there was almost always

some activity that a politician was not eager to

share with the press. He would make the four and a

half-hour drive over to the university and meet this

English professor who was offering to provide

details about secret hearings and a related suicide.

~~~
The campus was virtually deserted for the
Thanksgiving break. The brisk November chill and
the absence of activity provided an atmosphere of
unsettling calm. Wilson studied the professor, who
had just finished relating a most incredible
narrative
of
intrigue,
intimidation,
and
ruthlessness, of students hired as informants, secret
interrogations in area motels, suspects prohibited
from confronting accusers, professors removed
from classrooms, people branded as “queer”
because of the clothes they wore or their
mannerisms, a secret list being compiled for
dismissal after the Christmas break—all activities
that, if true, would constitute an outrageous abuse
of power sanctioned by the state itself. And
equally astonishing, the president of the university
himself complicit in the committee’s proceedings.
~~~

Wilson had barely two weeks before the Christmas

break. He scanned the names that Cohen had given

him. Edmond Dority was first on the list. He

dialed the number.

“Pharmacy,” the voice answered.

“I would like to speak with Edmond Dority,

please,” Wilson said.

“I’m afraid he can’t talk at this time. May I tell

him who is calling?” the student asked.

“Andrew Wilson with the Tampa Times

Sentinel,” he said. Seconds later, Edmond Dority

was on the phone.

~~~
Each time Simon Prevatt answered the phone, he
wondered if this was the call summoning him to
the president’s office. The deep circles under his
eyes betrayed his lack of sleep. It was two weeks
before the Christmas break, and all he could think
about was wanting this all to be over.
Prevatt’s phone was ringing again and he
reluctantly picked it up. The voice on the other end
asked, “Professor Prevatt?”
“Who is this?” he asked wearily.
“Andrew Wilson with the Tampa Times
Sentinel. I’d like to meet with you.”
~~~

Nelson Bosnick had not returned his calls, so

Andrew Wilson waited outside the office cubicle.

He soon saw Bosnick shuffling aimlessly down the

hallway, shoulders stooped, eyes diverted to his

feet. He had not shaved and the gray stubble on his

face was almost concealed by the chalk-white

sagging skin.

“Who are you? What do you want from me?” he

asked.

“I’m with the Tampa Times Sentinel . I’d like a

few moments of your time.”

~~~
Wilson took notes as each individual recounted the
ordeals of the interrogation, but it was Zack
Conner’s interrogation that riveted him: students
unable to defend themselves against a state-
sanctioned inquisition, the most vulnerable targets
of what was clearly a political witch hunt.
